CREIGHTON, Allison Graham (1886-1977), a native of Halifax, N.S., was born on 18 February 1886 and graduated from the Halifax Academy in 1903. He studied architecture at the University of Toronto from 1903 to 1906, then worked as an assistant in the offices of Herbert E. Gates in Halifax and for J.H.G. Russell in Winnipeg. In 1907 he moved to Prince Albert, Sask. and during the next decade made a substantial contribution to the architectural development of the town as the most active and prolific architect in the region. He was in partnership with a 'Mr. McConnell' (in 1907-08), then worked alone before commencing a new partnership with Frederick Crowther (in 1913-14). He was elected President of the Saskatchewan Assoc. of Architects in 1916 (port. Const., ix, Dec. 1916, 417).
The devastation caused by the Halifax Explosion in December 1917 prompted Creighton to return to his hometown to assist with the reconstruction effort there. He remained until late 1920 when he took advantage of a business opportunity and purchased the architectural practice of the late James Sweeney, an American architect in New London, Connecticut. For the next forty years he lived and worked in that city, designing landmark works such as the New London County Golf Club, the Hand Academy in Madison, several branches of the New London Savings & Loan Co. in Groton, Mystic and Niantic, and buildings for the Williams Memorial Institute and for Connecticut College. Creighton retired in 1964 and died in Annapolis, Maryland on 14 February 1977 (obit. The Day [New London], 15 Feb. 1977, 19; biog. Who's Who & Why in Canada, 1913, 168; biog. and list of works H.J.
