Content, Joseph Charles Alphonse

CONTENT, Joseph Charles Alphonse (1872-1942) was active in Montreal and devoted much of his career to restoring and rebuilding the structures of many Roman Catholic churches in Montreal and surrounding counties. He registered with the Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects on 13 September 1898 and after 1900 carried on a practice under his own name until 1922. He was one of several competitors to submit a design for St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic Church in Montreal in 1912, but his scheme was passed over in favour of that by Casimir St. Jean. Many of his commissions were commissioned by the Roman Catholic Diocese in Montreal and surrounding towns in southern Quebec, and his works can also be found in Newfoundland and in eastern Ontario. J.C.A. Content died in Montreal on 21 August 1942 (death notice La Presse [Montreal], 22 Aug. 1942, 51; Le Devoir [Montreal], 24 Aug. 1942, 2). He should not be confused with another Montreal architect, L. Alphonse Contant, who lived and worked in Montreal during this period.
