Colangelo, Patsy

COLANGELO, Patsy (1907-1984), son of Joseph Colangelo, a Montreal policeman, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1907 and brought to Montreal by his family at the age of six. He trained with William S. Wright (in 1927-28) and with Irenee Vautrin (in 1930) while attending the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal. He graduated in 1931 and opened his own office there in late 1934. His most distinctive and memorable work was the striking Art Deco design for the Italian Club, MONTREAL, QUE, 1936-37, a building which was a focus for the activity for members of the Italian-Canadian Fascist Party. During WWII, the Canadian Army occupied the building and the interiors suffered much abuse. Colangelo was arrested in 1939 and spent nearly a month in Bordeaux Jail because of his involvement in the design of the building and for his participation in political events there. Much of his later work was devoted to schemes for apartment blocks in Outremont and in Montreal. He died in Montreal on 22 November 1984 (death notice Gazette [Montreal], 24 Nov. 1984, G11; inf.
