Clark, John Telford

CLARK, John Telford (1862-1945) was in partnership with Julian C. Forster at Owen Sound, Ont. from 1902 until 1920 (see list of works under Forster & Clark). Born in Annan, Grey Co., Ont. on 11 November 1862 he attended the School of Practical Science at the University of Toronto in 1892-94 but did not graduate. According to an obituary of Clark which was published in 1945, he opened an office in Niagara Falls, Ont. where he worked for five or six years, then became associated with James A. Ellis in Meaford, Ont. Clark then returned to Owen Sound in 1901 and formed a partnership with J.C. Forster, the prominent Owen Sound designer who had opened an office there in 1885. Their practice flourished, and together they dominated architectural scene in the Grey County area for nearly twenty years, producing dozens of institutional, ecclesiastical and residential designs. When Forster moved to Hamilton in 1919, Clark chose to remain in Owen Sound and continued to practice there under the original firm name of Forster & Clark. In 1926 he designed St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and later prepared plans for Strathcona Public School in Owen Sound in 1936. Clark died there on 20 May 1945 (obituary and biography in the Sun-Times [Owen Sound], 21 May 1945, 5; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects)
