Churchill, Samuel Augustus

CHURCHILL, Samuel Augustus (1870- 1933) succeeded William H. Churchill as Superintendent of Public Works for Newfoundland in August 1930 and held that position for a brief term until December 1931. In this capacity he directed the design and construction of only a few provincial buildings there were then being planned during this early Depression era. Born in Tilt Cove, Newfoundland on 20 August 1870 Churchill was educated in St. John's, Nfld. and took private courses in drawing and architecture under Professors Holloway, Nichol and Rev. Kirby. In 1901 he became foreman carpenter for the Public Works Dept. and in 1904 he was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Public Works for the Colony, working under the direct supervision of William H. Churchill for the next twenty-five years. He was suceeded in office by Charles W. Udle (biog. and port. in Who's Who in Newfoundland, 1930, 80)
