Chubb, Frederick John

CHUBB, Frederick John (1846- c 1902) was active in Brandon, Man. as an architect and builder, and he can be credited with the design of several commercial blocks during the building boom in that town in the early 1890's. By 1895 he had left Brandon and moved to Winnipeg where he opened a new office as an architect (Manitoba Morning Free Press [Winnipeg], 21 March 1895, 6). He may be the same 'F.J. Chubb' listed as an architect in Niagara Falls, Ont. in 1896 (Union Pub. Co. Directory for Haldimand, Halton, Lincoln, Welland & Wentworth, 1896). In 1897-99 another person named "Frederick J. Chubb , contractor" appears nearby in Niagara Falls, New York State (City of Niagara Falls New York Directory, 1897, 96).

Chubb was born in Warminster, Co. Wiltshire, England in 1846 and emigrated to the United States in 1870, settling in Litchfield, Michigan where he was listed as a brick mason. By 1875 he had moved to Guelph, Ontario and became a successful builder there (City of Guelph Directory, 1875-77, p. 70). By 1881, he had moved to nearby Woodstock, Ont. to continue his career as a builder, but it is unclear why he decided to move west to the Prairies and settle in Manitoba after 1890. No information has been found on his activity in upstate New York after 1900.
