Chown, Wilfred Dwight

CHOWN, Wilfred Dwight (1887-1962) practiced in several cities in Canada. Born in Spencerville, Ont. on 28 July 1887 he was the son of Dr. & Mrs. S.D. Chown. He received his education in Toronto and studied architecture in evening classes held at the Toronto Technical School in 1903-04. Chown served his apprenticeship with Francis S. Baker from 1903 to 1907 and was tutored by John M. Lyle and A.H. Chapman before passing his O.A.A. examinations in 1909. He then worked in Toronto for two years before moving to Calgary (in 1912), to Vancouver (in 1913), then to Salmon Arm, B.C. (in 1914-15). By 1924 he had returned to Toronto to work as draftsman for Stevens & Lee and for G. Roper Gouninlock. Few references to his work can be found. He died in Toronto on 26 March 1962 (inf. from Ontario Assoc. of Architects). He may have been related to Henry J. Chown of Toronto.
