Chausse, Charles H.

CHAUSSE, Charles H. (1862-1921) opened an office in Montreal in 1879 and for the next decade he was active there as a successful designer of churches, hospitals and public buildings. By 1890 he had established a reputation for making '..a speciality of producing artistic designs and fine architectural plans and specifications for churches and public buildings' (Dominion Illustrated [Montreal], 1891-92, 140). His office was busy enough to provide continual employment for two draughtsmen. In late 1890 he joined the Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects and formed a partnership with Ernest Mesnard, perhaps a brother of Albert Mesnard (C.R., ii, 21 Feb. 1891, 1). Within a matter of months, however, their business operation was dissolved and Chausse continued to work under his own name until after 1915. He also took an active interest in local politics and served as an alderman from 1899 to 1902 in Ville St. Louis (now part of the Laurier Ward in Montreal). Chausse died in Montreal on 10 March 1921 (obit. and port. La Presse [Montreal], 12 March 1921, 6; inf. ANQM, Members Register for the P.Q.A.A.)
