Caron, G. Fernand

CARON, G. Fernand (1905-1963), born in Quebec City on 7 June 1905, studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Quebec City and graduated in 1930. He later studied at Columbia University in New York City in 1931 and after his return to Quebec City he worked in the office of J.G. Gabriel Vallerand. After the sudden death of Vallerand in 1937 Caron practiced under his own name and was assisted by a young and talented designer Robert Blatter, who was later to become his business partner. Together they collaborated on one of the early modernist landmarks in the province, that of the Cartier Theatre in Rimouski, Que. (1937). Caron died in Quebec City on 12 May 1963 (obit. Le Soleil [Quebec City], 13 May 1963, 31; obit. R.A.I.C. Journal, xl, Sept. 1963, 16; biog. and port. Les Biographies Francaises d'Amerique, 1950, 807)
