Cane, Henry

CANE, Henry (1860-1935) was born in England on 30 September 1860 and emigrated to Canada in 1894. In Nelson, B.C. he was partner to James A. MacDonald and with him designed a major hotel in that town in 1900 (C.R., xi, 4 July 1900, 2). They also acted as local supervising architects for construction of the Post Office, Vernon Street, for the Dept. of Public Works (designed by David Ewart). After dissolution of their partnership in 1901 Cane continued to practise independently in Nelson until 1907 when he retired (biog. in B.C. Heritage Conservation Branch, Nelson: A Proposal for Urban Heritage Conservation, 1981, 95; D. Luxton, Building the West: The Early Architects of British Columbia, 2003, 457, 495).
