Campbell, William

CAMPBELL, William (fl. 1857-62) of Saint John, N. B. gave testimony in 1859 that he was '...an architect and builder, 14 or 15 years in business for myself, and 34 years altogether' in the industry (New Brunswick, Legislative Assembly Proceedings, 1859, Appendix, European and North American Railway). He is probably the same 'Mr. Campbell' who designed the Dramatic Lyceum, King Square, SAINT JOHN, N.B., in 1857. This early theatre, erected for Mr. Lanergan, was a 'chaste and conveniently fitted up structure adapted to hold about a thousand people' (New Brunswick Courier [Saint John], 20 June 1857, 2; M. Smith, History of Theatre in Saint John, 1981, 63). Campbell conducted a school of design and drawing in Saint John in 1857 (Morning News [Saint John] 24 Aug. 1857, 2) and opened a stoneyard in 1859 to manufacture chimney pieces and tombstones (Morning News [Saint John], 7 Dec. 1859, 2).
