Campbell, W. Stewart

CAMPBELL, W. Stewart (fl. 1906-08) was active in Edmonton, Alta. where he designed the landmark Union Hotel, (later the Cecil Hotel), Jasper Avenue at 4th Street, EDMONTON, ALTA., 1906 (Edmonton Daily Bulletin, 4 June 1906, 2, t.c.; 2 Oct. 1906, 8, descrip.). He was later commissioned to design a substantial addition to that same hotel in 1907 (Const., i, Oct. 1907, 66). Campbell was also credited with the plans for a residence for William E. Grierson, 12th Street near McKay Avenue, EDMONTON, ALTA., 1906 (Edmonton Daily Bulletin, 21 June 1906, 7, t.c.). After a major fire in 1907 he supervised the rebuilding of the Chisholm Block, Jasper Avenue, EDMONTON, ALTA. (Manitoba Free Press [Winnipeg], 14 Nov. 1907, 11, descrip.). He appears to have left Alberta in late 1907 or early 1908 and relocated to Vancouver, B.C. where he was in partnership with John McLaren, in the firm of Campbell & McLaren, Architects (Vancouver City Directory, 1908, 457). Their collaboration was brief, however, and by 1909 their partnership had been dissolved.
