Davis, Huntly Ward

DAVIS, Huntly Ward (1875-1952), partner in the Montreal firm of Hogle & Davis, was born in Montreal on 22 October 1875 and studied architecture in Boston at the Massachusetts Inst. of Technology where he graduated in 1898. He returned to Montreal and articled in the office of Sir Andrew T. Taylor, and there met his future professional partner Morley Hogle. Before Taylor returned to England in 1904 he invited both of his junior associates to become partners in the firm of Taylor, Hogle & Davis. Much of the design work by that firm from 1904 onward can be attributed solely to Hogle & Davis, who were retained by the Merchants Bank of Canada to design branches for the bank in six provinces. Their collaboration would have extended for many years had it not been for the sudden death of Hogle in January 1920. Davis then commenced practice in Montreal under his own name and he '...allied himself with that small group of young architects who saw beyond the ornate fashion of the day and consistently designed quiet, dignified town houses, country homes, banks and institutes of higher learning, always in the tradition of fine craftsmanship and classical proportion' (comments from Norton A. Fellowes, in the R.A.I.C. Journal, xxix, Dec. 1952, 369). Davis died at Ste. Marguerite, Que. on 12 October 1952 (obit. Gazette [Montreal], 13 Oct. 1952, 14; obit. & port. Montreal Daily Star, 14 Oct. 1952, 8; R.A.I.C. Journal, xxix, Dec. 1952, 369; biog. in W.H. Atherton, Montreal from 1535 to 1914, iii, 103)
