Davies, Robert Edgar

DAVIES, Robert Edgar (1882-1959) was a junior partner in the Winnipeg firm of McCowan & Davies, Architects and Constructional Engineers (biog. in Winnipeg Telegram, 18 Sept. 1906, 55). Born in Nottingham, England in July 1882, he studied architecture at the Nottingham School of Art & Design and emigrated to Canada after 1900. After arriving in Winnipeg he entered the office of Hugh McCowan and worked as his chief assistant until 1905 when he was offered a partnership with McCowan. In early 1919 he was appointed to the position of City Architect for Winnipeg (Winnipeg Tribune, 18 Feb. 1919, 3), and he held responsibility for the design and construction of all city-owned buildings. In that capacity, he prepared the plans for the Civic Office Building (1919), and for the Nurses Home for the Winnipeg General Hospita; Davies later died in Winnipeg on 21 April 1959 (obit.
