Everett, Col. Arthur James

EVERETT, Col. Arthur James (1891-1983) was born in Toronto and received his architectural training under Darling & Pearson and with Burke, Horwood & White. He joined the Ontario Assoc. of Architects in 1912 and after WWI he frequently collaborated with James D. Wilson of Toronto, but they appear to have not had a formal partnership. In 1931 they submitted an elaborate proposal for a circular sports arena on the site of the old Knox College, Spadina Crescent, Toronto, but their scheme was never realilsed (Toronto Star, 9 Jan. 1931, 2, illus. & descrip.). From 1931 to 1955 Everett was Chief Architect for the Imperial Bank of Canada, designing key branches for the bank in a subtle Deco style, and commissioning other branches from local architects. He died in Toronto on 5 April 1983 (death notice Globe & Mail [Toronto], 6 April 1983, C8; biog. Canadian Who's Who, 1949-50, 316; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects)
