Eveleth, Samuel F.

EVELETH, Samuel Fowler (1837 - 1889) of New York City, N.Y. devised an elaborate Stick Style design for a large house 'recently prepared for erection on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, a short distance from MONTREAL, QUE.' The scheme appeared in A.J. Bicknell's popular pattern book entitled Wooden and Brick Buildings with Details, 1875, plates 49-50. The name of the Canadian client is unknown but, if it was built, it would represent Eveleth's only known work in this country. Born at Danvers, Mass. on 8 October 1837, he maintained an office in Manhattan from 1869 to 1879, and in Brooklyn in 1882-88. He was the author of a book of designs for American school buildings entitled Schoolhouse Architecture, pub. c. 1870 (H.R. Hitchcock, American Architectural Books, 1976, item 430; D.S. Francis, Architects in Practise New York City 1840-1900, 29). Eveleth died in Danvers, Mass. on 11 November 1889.
