Evans, William Herbert

EVANS, William Herbert (1870-1942) of North Battleford, Sask. was in partnership there with George J. Stephenson (see list works under Stephenson & Evans). Born in Liverpool, Engl. on 31 March 1870, he articled with J. Cowell of that city and was employed for four years in Newcastle-on-Tyne as assistant to his future business partner G.J. Stephenson. When Stephenson emigrated to Canada in 1904 he opened offices at Battleford and Payton, Sask., Evans followed shortly after and they opened a new office in neighbouring North Battleford in 1910. Evans was active there until 1917; he alone is credited with the design of the Public Library in North Battleford which he undertook in 1916 while Stephenson was serving overseas with the Canadian Army during WWI. In 1920 Evans moved to Los Angeles, Calif. and later died there on 12 December 1942 (death notice, Los Angeles Times, 14 Dec. 1942, Section Two, p. 15; inf. Saskatchewan Assoc. of Architects).
