Evans, William Garnett

EVANS, William Garnett (1891-1972) of Hamilton, Ont. was born there on 29 June 1891 and attended classes at the Hamilton Art School. He served an apprenticeship with Munro & Mead from July 1908 until early 1911 then worked as draftsman in the Toronto office of Stevens & Lee. In May 1913 he formed a partnership in Hamilton with Stanley T.J. Evans enlisted with the U.S. Army office in Detroit, and served with the 16th Engineer Brigade until May 1919. In January 1920 both he and Fryer re-opened the office and worked together until December 1925. Evans then decided to move to Detroit to work with Smith, Hinchman & Grylls and with Marcus R. Burrowes, returning again to Canada in November 1927 to join the Toronto office of Darling & Pearson. From 1931 onward he was active in Hamilton and in 1947 formed a partnership with Herbert E. Murton. Evans retired from the profession in December 1960 and died in Hamilton on 10 December 1972 (death notice Spectator [Hamilton], 11 Dec. 1972, 29; inf. Ontario Association of Architects).
