Evans, George Thomas

EVANS, George Thomas (1889-1969) specialised in the design of churches and schools in the Hamilton-Wentworth region of Ontario. Born there on 30 September 1889 he worked as a student for Stewart McPhie and studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia from 1910 to 1913. He joined the Montreal office of Ross & MacFarlane and returned to Hamilton in September 1914 to open an office under his own name. He advocated a practical approach to the problems of ecclesiastical design and wrote at length on the subject in an essay entitled 'Planning a New Church' (Canadian Baptist [Toronto], 22 Jan. 1925, 3). His designs were inspired by Gothic precedent, but were often modest in size and scale in conformance with strict budgets imposed on him by many Baptist, Anglican and United Church congregations. At the time of his death on 22 November 1969 he had completed the design of more than thirty post-war schools in Hamilton, Burlington, Aldershot, Dunnville and Ancaster, executed in a modernist style and erected between 1945 and 1960 (obituary in The Spectator [Hamilton], 24 Nov. 1969, 10; inf. from Ont.
