Vallerand, J.A. Gabriel

VALLERAND, Joseph Andre Gabriel (1905-1937) was born in Quebec City and graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique there in 1931. He opened his own office in early 1932 and frequently collaborated with Raoul Chenevert and Robert Blatter, both of whom were progressive designers responsible for innovative use of the moderne and Art Deco styles in the Quebec City region. Vallerand's promising career was cut short due to his sudden death when the airplane he was piloting crashed near Quebec City on 7 November 1937 (portrait and obituary in L'Action Catholique [Quebec City], 8 Nov. 1937, 1, 11; Le Soleil [Quebec City], 8 Nov. 1937, 1, 3, and 16; obit Globe & Mail [Toronto], 8 Nov. 1937, 1).
