Grise, Joseph Arthur

GRISE, Joseph Arthur (1895-1966) was active in Montreal where much of his career was spent as Chief Architect for the Banque Canadienne Nationale. He graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in 1917 and joined the Province of Quebec Association of Architects in 1920. His schemes for bank buildings are orthodox interpretations of the Beaux Arts style but lack the refinement and elegance of bank buildings being designed in the Montreal area at this time by Kenneth Rea and John M. Lyle. Grise resigned from the Association in 1953, and later died in Montreal on 27 November 1966 (death notice Gazette [Montreal], 29 Nov. 1966, 60; inf. from membership files of the P.Q.A.A., Montreal)
