Greenfield, Joseph

GREENFIELD, Joseph (1845-1910) was born at Croydon, England on 4 May 1845 and came to Canada in 1865. Both he and John H. Ewart formed a partnership in Toronto in early 1876 and were active there until late 1879. The economic boom in western Canada drew Greenfield to Winnipeg where he was '....well recommended by many of the most influential men in Ontario for his extensive experience in the designing and constructing of public buildings' (Winnipeg Daily Times, 26 Feb. 1880, 4). He formed a partnership with Edward McCoskrie soon after his arrival there, but their association was shortlived and by May 1881 it had been dissolved (see list of works under McCoskrie & Greenfield). He opened his own office in Winnipeg in 1881 and remained active in that city until April 1905 when he accepted an appointment to become the local Supervising Architect for the federal Department of Public Works. He died in Winnipeg on 3 November 1910 (obituary in the Manitoba Free Press [Winnipeg], 4 Nov. 1910, 5; biography in Pioneers and Early Citizens of Manitoba, 1971, 90). He was active in the Masonic order in Winnipeg and was Grand Master of the Prince Rupert Lodge in 1892. His portrait can be found in H. Beresford, Prince Rupert's Lodge - 80 Years 1870-1950, 8.
