Gaviller, Maurice

GAVILLER, Maurice (1842-1928) was educated as a civil engineer, graduating at first from the University of Toronto in 1859, and then obtained a degree from McGill University in 1863 before beginning his career as as Dominion Land Surveyor in 1866. He was active in the following offices:

Gaviller & Bird, Barrie, Ont., Dec. 1872 to Jan. 1873
Gaviller & Thomson, Barrie, Ont. Feb. 1873 to May 1876
Kennedy, Gaviller & Holland, with offices in Barrie, Toronto, Collingwood and Owen Sound, Dec. 1883 to July 1885

In January 1872 he formed a partnership in Barrie, Ont. with Shearman G. Bird, but the untimely death of Bird in early 1873 necessitated the creation of a new alliance, this time with A. Clifford Thomson (Northern Advance [Barrie], 27 Feb. 1873, 2, advert.). Their collaboration showed some initial success; they opened a branch office in Alliston, but by May 1876 their joint practice had ended, with Thomson completing commissions by their firm, and Gaviller departing on a journey around the world. He returned to Ontario in 1879 and resided in Hamilton and Drummondville before moving back to Barrie in 1883 to become partners with Thomas Kennedy and William Holland (see list of works under Kennedy, Gaviller & Holland). They operated three branch offices, one in Barrie (headed by Kennedy), one in Toronto (headed by Holland), and one in Collingwood, where Gaviller remained for the duration of his career. He died there on 18 January 1928 (obit. The Messenger [Collingwood], 21 Jan. 1928, 1 & 4; biog. and port in Annual Report of the Assoc. of Ontario Land Surveyors for 1928, 96-9; biog. in H. Morgan, Canadian Men & Women of the Time, 1898, 370; inf. Stephen A. Otto, Toronto)
