GAUTHIER, Joseph Zephirin (1900-1978) was the son of Louis Zephirin Gauthier, a prolific ecclesiastical architect of Montreal. Born on 13 May 1900 he was educated at Mont St. Louis Academy and graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique at the University of Montreal in 1922. The following year he joined the Province of Quebec Association of Architects and formed a partnership with J. Leonide Deshaies in 1924, but their firm was dissolved later that same year and Gauthier opened an office under his own name specialising in the design of small apartment buildings in Outremont and in the city of Montreal. In 1931 he formed another partnership, this time with Gaston Gagnier, but a dearth of work led to the dissolution of this office in October 1931 and Gauthier continued to practice under his own name until 1961 when he retired from the profession. An extensive list of his designs for houses and duplexes in the Montreal suburb of Outremont, erected during the period from 1924 until 1959, can be found in P.R. Bisson & S. Perrotte, Inventaire des Travaux d'Architectes a Outremont, 1987, 62-67. Gauthier died in Montreal on 13 August 1978 (death notice La Presse [Montreal], 14 Aug. 1978, page D 9; death notice Gazette [Montreal], 15 Aug. 1978, 55; biography and port. in Biographies Canadiennes Francaises, 1928-29, 306). .
