Gaul, Hermann J.

GAUL, Hermann J. (1869-1949) of Chicago, Ill. prepared an austere and spartan design for the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Convent, Snake Road, WATERDOWN, ONT. (R.A.I.C. Journal, iv, Nov. 1927, xii, illus. in advert.). This extensive complex was erected for the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1926-27. Gaul was the designer of many works for the Chicago Diocese including Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, South Aberdeen Street, 1909, and St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church, West Irving Park Road, 1918 (AIA Guide to Chicago, 1993, 224, 389). He died in Chicago on 24 November 1949 (obituary in the New York Times, 27 Nov. 1949, 104)
