Nichols, William

NICHOLS, William (1850-1919) of Niagara Falls, Ont. was born in Bronte, Ontario on 7 January 1850 and likely obtained his training in the building trades. In 1887 he advertised himself as a 'Practical Architect' offering to prepare plans and specifications and to superintend contracts for buildings (Niagara Falls Review, 18 March 1887, advert.). He practiced under his own name for nearly thirty years and was briefly in partnership in 1907 with Henry D. Suess, as Nichols & Suess, and in 1909 with Alonzo B. Robertson, a builder and contractor. He may be the same 'William Nichols' who is credited with the design of the parsonage for the Methodist Church in Wingham, Ont. in 1875-76 (A Brief Historical Sketch of Wingham Methodist Church 1863-1924, 9). Nichols was active in Niagara Falls until c. 1910, and later died there on 17 September 1919. He may also have been related to Thomas L. Nichols, an architect in nearby Welland, Ont.
