New, Herbert Henry

NEW, Herbert Henry (1876-1952) was born in Hamilton, Ont. on 13 May 1876 but received his training in Boston, Mass. where he worked under C. Herbert McClare, Clarence H. Blackall and the firm of Wheelwright & Haven from 1895 until 1898. He travelled extensively in Europe studying historical architecture then returned to Hamilton to work for a major terra cotta manufacturer as a draftsman. This company was likely the Hamilton & Toronto Sewer Pipe Co., for which H.H. New is recorded as the architect for their factory in 1899. In early 1905 he moved to Winnipeg to open his own office but by early 1908 he had returned to Hamilton to continue his practice. In 1922 he withdrew from the profession and became president of Furnival-New Mfr. Co. After 1926 he held a position with the Hamilton Pressed Brick Co. New died in Hamilton on 14 October 1952 (biog. in C.A.B., xvii, Sept. 1904, 149; Winnipeg Telegram, 18 Sept. 1906, 55; Const., i, April 1908, 37; obit. Spectator [Hamilton], 14 Oct. 1952, 8)
