Munro, Harry Gordon

MUNRO, Harry Gordon (1883-1913) came to Canada from Edinburgh in 1903 and later worked in the building deaprtment of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. In January 1907 he moved to Prince Rupert, B.C. where he became the first architect to practise the profession in that town. He was joined by W. Nicholson Lailey in 1910 and briefly worked with him, designing several major commercial and residential works in a mannered style using wood frame cladding, the only building material available in the town. Munro's health began to deteriorate from lthe effects of pleurisy and by late 1911 their partnership had been terminated '...owing to the protracted indisposition of the senior member of the firm (Daily News [Prince Rupert], 4 Sept. 1911, 1). Munro sought treatment in southern B.C. and returned to Prince Rupert in April 1912. He died there on 17 January 1913 (obit. Daily News [Prince Rupert], 17 Jan. 1913, 4; 20 Jan. 1913, 1; inf.
