Morehouse, Ernest William

MOREHOUSE, Ernest William (1871-1937), a native of Chatsworth, Ontario, was born there on 21 August 1871 and was active in Chatham and in Detroit, Mich. before he moved to Alberta in 1910. He was likely educated and trained in Ontario, but he moved to nearby Detroit, Mich. after 1900 and was recorded as a foreman with the W.F. Hurd Co., a manufacturer of doors and windows, in 1908 (City of Detroit Directory, 1908, p. 1607). In 1909 and 1910 he was living and working in Detroit as a building contractor, but moved to Alberta in early 1911. In Edmonton he '...made a speciality study of factories and manufacturing plants', but his best known works are for opulent residences in the Highlands neighbourhood including the sprawling Georgian Revival mansion for real estate developer William J. Magrath. In 1912 he was briefly in partnership with Arthur Nesbitt (see list of works under Nesbitt & Morehouse). No references to Morehouse can be found after 1922 (biog. and list works Edmonton Capital, Progress Number, 25 Sept. 1912). He left Alberta in 1921 or 1922 and moved back to Detroit to continue his career as an architect, and his name appears in city directories there until after 1930 (City of Detroit Directory, 1928, p. 1510). He died in Detroit on 21 April 1937 (obituary Edmonton Journal, 21 April 1937, 9; obituary Detroit Free Press, 22 April 1937, 26).
