Moberly, Clarence Wishaw

MOBERLY, Clarence Wishaw (1838-1902) succeeded Sandford Fleming in the post of Chief Engineer of the Northern Railway in Ontario in January 1863 and held this position until his retirement in 1873. Born at Penetanguishine, Ont. in 1838 he received his profession training under the direct supervision of the Managing Director of the railway Frederic W. Cumberland, and likely gained some knowledge of both engineering and architecture under his tutelage. He continued to practice as architect in Toronto until 1878 then moved to Winnipeg where his name is associated with a grand visionary scheme for the Canadian Pacific Railway Hotel, Main Street at Broadway, 1882 (Manitoba Free Press [Winnipeg], 23 March 1882, 1, t.c. & descrip.). This structure, intended to be one of the first commerical buildings in Manitoba using iron columns and beams, was to rise five stories and measure 200 feet by 260 feet, but only the foundations were completed before the scheme was abandoned (Manitoba Free Press [Winnipeg], 28 April 1883). The downturn in the Winnipeg economy prompted Moberly to move to Calgary where he became one of the first professionally-trained architects to practice in Alberta (Calgary Weekly Herald, 2 Jan. 1884). Moberly died at St. Louis, Missouri on 21 October 1902 (death notice St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 23 Oct. 1902; obit. Manitoba Free Press [Winnipeg], 3 Nov. 1902, 6; biog. in The Mail [Toronto], 27 Nov. 1873, 1)
