Mellish, Albert Henry

MELLISH, Albert Henry (1836-1918), son of William Mellish of Brantford, was born in England and came to Canada with his parents in 1841. He trained under his father and became a partner with him in 1874 in the firm of Mellish & Son. In 1882 or 1883 he moved away from Brantford but returned to the city in March 1884 prepared to '.....devote his attention fully to his profession as an architect' (Brantford Weekly Expositor, 7 March 1884, 8). When his father retired in 1886 he took over the office and continued to practice under his own name until after 1900 when he started a book and stationery business in Brantford. He died there on 16 July 1918 (obituary in Daily Expositor (Brantford), 18 July 1918, 6; and The Courier [Brantford], 18 July 1918, 5).

BRANTFORD, ONT., Colborne Street Methodist Church, 1886; completed by William A. Edwards in 1887-88 (Globe [Toronto], 12 June 1886, 14, t.c.; Daily Expositor [Brantford], 2 May 1887, 1, illus. & detailed descrip.; Colborne Street United Church Golden Jubilee Souvenir, 1937, 7, illus.). The design for this church was said to have closely resembled, or was a copy of, the designs by William Mellish for the Gore Street Methodist Church, Hamilton (1878), and the Methodist Church in Norwich, Ont. (1885-86), and it is possible that Albert M. may have assisted his father in preparing the drawings for these earlier churches.
