McPhie, Stewart Thomson

McPHIE, Stewart Thomson (1874-1934), active in Hamilton, Ont. in the following offices:

Stewart T. McPhie, Hamilton, April 1896 to 1905;
McPhie & Mahoney, Hamilton, 1905 to 1906, with branch office in Guelph run by W.A. Mahoney;
Stewart T. McPhie, Hamilton, 1905 to 1913;
McPhie, Kelly & Darling, Hamilton, 1913 to 1916 (with B. Frank Kelly and Ernest H. Darling);
McPhie & Kelly, Hamilton, 1916 to 1927 (with B. Frank Kelly)
Stewart T. McPhie, Hamilton, 1928 to 1934

McPhie was born in Hamilton on 12 September 1874 and attended Central School and the Hamilton Art School where he was awarded a Silver Medal for his mechanical drawing proficiency (Toronto World, 27 June 1891, 3). He served a five year apprenticeship under William Stewart in 1890-95 and opened an office in Hamilton the following year. Some of his early clients were from the Wellington County area and his success there prompted him to open a branch office in Guelph in partnership with W.A. Mahoney, although it is likely that designs from that office were executed by Mahoney while McPhie remained preoccupied with commissions in Hamilton. In 1907 he formed a partnership with B. Frank Kelly, another Hamilton architect, and E.H. Darling, an engineer by training. Darling left the partnership in 1916 while McPhie & Kelly continued to practise until 1928, after which McPhie worked alone until his death in 1934.

Many of McPhie's residential designs drew inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan, a characteristic which is evident in his use of a long, thin yellow Roman brick, a material obtained from his brother Norman D. McPhie, a specialty brick and building products salesman with whom he shared offices in the Pigott Building. He was a lifelong member of the MacNab Street Presbyterian Church and at the time of his death he was supervising the restoration of the church (a commission completed by W.L Somerville of Toronto). McPhie died at Port Nelson, Ont. on 14 April 1934 (obituary in the Spectator [Hamilton], 14 April 1934, 7; Const., xxvii, March -April 1934, 56; inf. from Ontario Assoc. of Architects, Application for Registration dated 18 Sept. 1931; Dictionary of Hamilton Biography, iii, 1992, 140)
