Austin, Aaron

AUSTIN, Aaron(1887-1960) was active in Guelph, Ont. as an architect in partnership with William A. Mahoney (see list of works under Mahoney & Austin). Born in Port Dover on 6 February 1887 he was educated there and served an apprenticeship with Stewart McPhie of Hamilton from 1905 to 1907. He joined the office of William A. Mahoney in Guelph, Ont. in 1909 and worked as a draftsman there until 1915. He moved to Detroit, Michigan in late 1915 to work as an architect and designer for the Detroit Edison Co. before returning to Guelph to form a partnership with W.A. Mahoney in January 1919. This office continued until 1948 when Austin moved to Port Dover and retired. He died in Simcoe, Ont. on 7 August 1960 (obituary in the Port Dover Maple Leaf, 12 August 1960; inf. from the Ontario Association of Architects; inf. H. Barrett, Nanticoke).
