McCARTHY, Charles Joseph (1856-c. 1952) of St. John's, Nfld. was associated with William F. Butler and Jonas Barter early in his career and was credited with '......the neat Gothic church' designed as a chapel at MOUNT CARMEL, NFLD, 1899 (Evening Telegram [St. John's], 17 July 1899). He also designed several other churches in Newfoundland for the Roman Catholic Diocese, including Corpus Christie R.C. Church, KILBRIDE, NFLD. (1923), and the Torbay R.C. Church, TORBAY, NFLD., the Bell Island R.C. Church, and Star Hall, Henry Street, ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. (1922-23), and Plank Street R.C. School (now Talbot Hall), Deanery Avenue, ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. He also carried out the reconstruction of Holy Name Society Hall, Harvey Road, ST. JOHN'S, NFLD., 1926-27; demol. (Newfoundland Quarterly, xxvii, Dec. 1927, illus. & descrip.).
