McCarthy, Charles

McCARTHY, Charles (fl. 1858-70) was listed as an architect with offices on Park Street, Lindsay, Ontario in the 1869-70 edition of the County of Victoria Directory. In 1858 he prepared an ambitious Gothic design for St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Russell Street, LINDSAY, ONT. (E. Boland, History of the Diocese of Peterborough 1882-1975, 1976, 304-5, illus.). In 1864 he drew plans for the Town Hall in LINDSAY, ONT., but his submission lacked political support and lost on a vote by the Town Council (Canadian Post [Lindsay], 13 May 1864, 2). The Toronto architect William Kauffmann was awarded this commission later that same year.
