McBride, Thornton Carroll

McBRIDE, Thornton Carroll (1888- 1973), son of Hubert C. McBride, was born in London, Ont. on 22 June 1888 and studied architecture at the University of Toronto where he graduated in 1911. Much of his training was obtained in the office of his father between 1919 and 1925. In August 1925 he was appointed City Architect and Inspector of Buildings for London and held the post for nearly a decade. One of his major works from this period was a reserved and distinctively uncivic design for the City Hall, LONDON, ONT. (1927). His most accomplished work is that of the William Memorial Library, a sophisticated modernist landmark with refined classical detailing and formal symmetry that may be attributed more L.G. Bridgman than to McBride. He retired from the profession in 1960 and later died in London, Ont. on 3 October 1973 (inf. Ontario Association of Architects)
