Marshall, Brenton De Gruchy

MARSHALL, Brenton De Gruchy (1797-1868) served as City Architect in Halifax, Nova Scotia from 1850 until 1868, but the only work of significance that can be associated with his name is in connection with the City Prison at Rock Head Farm, Gottingen Street, HALIFAX, N.S., 1857-58 (Morning Chronicle [Halifax] 31 March 1857, 2; Nova Scotian [Halifax] 25 May 1857, 2, descrip.). He served as the superintending architect to Henry G. Hill who was the designer of this austere three storey structure. Marshall died at Halifax on 18 May 1868 during his tenure as City Architect, and he was succeeded in that post by Horatio B. Sellon (obituary in Morning Chronicle [Halifax], 19 May 1868, 2; biography in M. Rosinski, Architects of Nova Scotia: A Biographical Dictionary, 1994, 102).
