MALLORY, Frank Scott Sr. (1860-1932), son of William H. Mallory, was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and came to Canada with his parents in 1867. It is presumed that he trained under his father and upon the death of latter in May 1886 he continued to practice in partnership with his brother John W. Mallory in Toronto. From 1888 until 1892 he is listed in the Toronto directories as a student in the office of Richard Ough, and then he opened an office under his own name in 1894. One of his first commissions was for an elaborate Opera House 'in the Romish Renaissance style' on Spadina Avenue, but it is uncertain if this was built (Toronto Daily Mail, 27 July 1894, 5, descrip.). From 1896 Mallory worked as a draftsman for F.H. Herbert and took over his practice in 1914 (Const., vii, Nov. 1914, 420). He died in Toronto on 17 August 1932 (obituary in the Toronto Star, 17 Aug. 1932, 28; Mail & Empire [Toronto], 18 Aug. 1932, 4). His son Frank S. Mallory Jr. was also an architect in Toronto, but predeceased his father.
