MacDougall, Henry

MacDOUGALL, Henry (1844-1877), son of Lt. Col. John MacDougall of Scotland, was born in India on 16 February 1844 and was later brought to Scotland by his parents in 1850 or 1851. He came to Canada in late 1868 with his brother Alan MacDougall and with Edward Macpherson Skae, another Edinburgh resident. Together they opened the office of MacDougall Bros. & Skae as 'Civil Engineers, Surveyors & Architects...to furnish plans and superintend the erection of Country Mansions, Villa Residences, and Farm Buildings on the most approved systems'. They also offered to '..undertake the laying out of Estate and Pleasure Grounds' (Globe [Toronto], 13 Oct. 1868, 1, advert.). Much of their architectural work was executed by Henry MacDougall who likely obtained his professional training in Scotland. In October 1870 their partnership was dissolved, with Henry continuing to work alone on several commissions for Anglican institutions such as Trinity College School, Port Hope, designed 'in the perpendicular Gothic style'. In late 1873 he met Frank Darling, a precocious young designer from London who had just completed his apprenticeship with George E. Street, a leading architect in London, England. They formed a partnership in early 1874 and completed several important commissions including two Anglican institutions, that of Bishop's College, Lennoxville, Que. (1874-75), and for new buildings on the Port Hope campus of Trinity College School. After April 1875 both MacDougall and Darling chose to pursue their own separate careers, with MacDougall returning to Scotland where he died on 21 August 1877 at Corstorphine, Edinburgh (death notice Scotsman [Edinburgh], 22 Aug. 1877; The Mail [Toronto], 4 Sept. 1877, 1; OA, York Co. Wills, 2756, 31 Dec. 1877)
