Poitras, Joseph Roch

POITRAS, Joseph Roch (1844-1885), born at St. Epiphane, Que. in 1844, he came to Montreal c. 1872 and commenced practice under his own name. In 1877 he formed a partnership with Louis G. Martin but their collaboration was brief and by 1880 Poitras had entered into a new partnership in Montreal with Victor Roy. Together they executed a number of ecclesiastical commissions for the Roman Catholic Diocese both in the city of Montreal, and in southern Quebec, and likely would have continued to flourish had it not been for the untimely death of Poitras on 1 October 1885 at the age of 41 years. He was buried at Cote des Neiges Cemetery in Montreal (obituary in La Minerve [Montreal], 3 Oct. 1885, 1; Gazette [Montreal], 5 Oct. 1885, 3; Le Monde [Montreal], 5 Oct. 1885, 3)
