Phillips, Henry George

PHILLIPS, Henry George (1854-1898) was active in Sarnia, Ont. from 1890 where he offered 'Designs, Plans and Specifications for all classes of buildings'. Born in Strathroy, Ont. on 6 July 1854, he learned the building trades and after 1888 he began to style himself as an architect. He claimed to have had '.....experience in superintending and construction of buildings of all kinds, and I am in a position to supply working plans for the alteration and remodeling of existing structures into the most improved styles' (Union Pub. Co. Directory of Essex, Kent & Lambton, 1895, 73, advert.). He solicited commissions in Sarnia and in the Lambton County area, and was the leading practitioner in that town during the last decade of the nineteenth century. He died unexpectedly at the age of 44 years in Sarnia on 26 January 1898 (obituary in the Sarnia Observer, 28 Jan. 1898, 1; inf. Ian Mason, Sarnia, Ont.)
