Pauw, John Adrian

PAUW, John Adrian (1891-1931) was active in Vancouver, B.C. from June 1927 where his best known work is a unique Prairie Style house designed for Brenton T. Lea, Marguerite Street at West King Edward Avenue, VANCOUVER, B.C., 1930 (H. Kalman, Exploring Vancouver, 1978, 160, illus.). Born in Amsterdam on 14 April 1891 Pauw attended the Delft Polytechnical School from 1909 to 1913 and then worked for two architects in Brussels, including Thomas Jasinski and Fernand Bodson (1877-1966) before launching his own career in Amsterdam in May 1915. He won the competition for the Public Library at Heerlen in 1917 and also designed a hotel and theatre as well as several private houses in that city. Pauw left The Netherlands in November 1921 and moved to Bucharest, Romania to continue his career designing apartment blocks and residences there. He was one of 377 architects to enter the international competition for the League of Nations Building in Geneva in 1927, but he was not one of the 27 finalists cited by the jury. A full list of the 27 architects who received First, Second Prizes, and Honorable Mentions, was published in the Montreal Daily Star, 23 July 1927, p. 19 & p 32. This list of finalists included luminaries of 20th C. architecture such as Le Corbusier of France and Hannes Meyer of Switzerland.

In April 1927 he left Romania and moved to Canada where he established an office in Vancouver. He died in Portland, Oregon on 29 August 1931 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident (obituary Daily Province [Vancouver], 31 Aug. 1931, 2; obit.
