Patterson, Edmund Brown

PATTERSON, Edmund Brown (1866-1946) of Hamilton, Ont. was active there from 1895 until 1930. Born in Ireland on 17 September 1866 he came to Canada at a young age and was educated at Central Collegiate and the Art School in Hamilton. He articled with William A. Edwards and opened his own office in 1896 specializing in the design of industrial buildings, private residences and walk-up apartment blocks. In 1897 John Patterson, the brother of Edmund B., was one of five Hamilton businessmen who established the Cataract Electric Power Company in a effort to bring low cost electricity to the population of Hamilton, Ont. It was logical that John Patterson would hire his brother Edmund to design the large brick Turbine Hall at Decew Falls, atop the Niagara Escarpment near St. Catharines, in 1898, and to also design the Transformer Station for the same power company, located on Victoria Avenue North in Hamilton. The power station at DeCew Falls still stands in 2022, and it is now the oldest continually running hydroelectric power generating station in Canada. Patterson also earned the distinction of planning one of the first units of the International Harvester Co. factory complex in Hamilton in 1902. He later died in Hamilton on 1 May 1946 (obituary in The Spectator [Hamilton], 2 May 1946, 7; OA, Wentworth Co., Wills 11594)
