Richards, John Bernard

RICHARDS, John Bernard (1883-1933) held the post of City Architect for Calgary for eight years and in this position designed several civic buildings including the Children's Hospital on the grounds of the General Hospital, the Nurse's Home, the Emergency Hospital at Riverside, Calgary, and several buildings on the Calgary Exhibition grounds. Born in Chigwell, Co. Essex, England he was trained in London and emigrated to Canada in 1905 and later formed a partnership in Calgary with S. Harry Burroughs (see list of works under Burroughs & Richards). Richards then worked as assistant to the City Engineer and was appointed to the post of City Architect in 1917. He resigned from this post in 1923 and moved to Glendale, California where he continued his architectural career, and in 1929 he relocated to Santa Monica. His works there include the lavish Riviera Golf & Country Club, Capri Drive, Pacific Palisades, CALIF. (1928) and the design of a chain of club houses for the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
