Reid, George Drever

REID, George Drever (1864-1928), together with his business partner Charles C. McAlpine (1864-1929) won the competition for the Public Library at MOOSE JAW, SASK. in early 1912 with their presentation of a refined Beaux-Arts design. Reid was born in the Orkney Islands, Scotland on 17 March 1864 and was educated and trained in Scotland. He emigrated to the United States in 1888 and settled in Malden, Mass. He was active in Boston where he formed a partnership with McAlpine in 1898. Their firm was one of a number of offices from the United States and Canada to submit an entry in this Saskatchewan competition, and when they were awarded First Premium both partners then moved to Moose Jaw in early 1912 to open an office. They collaborated with J.H.G. Russell as local supervising architect for the construction of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Moose Jaw (1912-14) and in 1913 submitted an entry in the competition for the West End School, Moose Jaw (Moose Jaw Evening Times, 15 May 1913, 1). Their design for the school was not premiated, and the winning scheme by another architect was never built. That same year they prepared plans for the new Y.M.C.A. in Moose Jaw, but this project was not realised. Reid returned to Boston in 1915 and continued to practise there. He later died in Malden, Mass. on 31 July 1928 (inf. Gordon Fulton, Ottawa)
