REEVES, Charles Aime (1872-1948) of Montreal, was born at Pointe-aux-Trembles, Que. on 5 March 1872 and studied at the Plateau Commercial Academy 'where his splendid talents, particularly in mathematics and designing, soon distinguished him'. He did not obtain a formal education in architecture, but likely trained under a local architect and commenced practice under his own name in 1898. Much of his early career was devoted to modest commissions for tenements and stores in the Maisonneuve and Viauville neighbourhoods of Montreal. Fluent in both French and English, he was sought after by several American industrialists to advise them on the design of large factories for the Slater Shoe Co., the Kingbury Shoe Co., the Royal Shoe Co. and Laniel & Co. He also served as consulting architect to the Roman Catholic School Commissions in Montreal, Pointe-aux-Trembles, Montreal East and St. Lin, and for a brief time was Building Inspector for the City of Maisonneuve. While prolific and adept at small commissions, his designs for large educational and institutional works were plain and repetitive interpretations of the Beaux Arts style, often over-dressed and lacking the refined scholarship found in the work of his peers such as J.O. Marchand and Eugene Payette. In the late 1920's his designs, particularly for the Terrebonne City Hall, were outdated and uninspired. Reeves retired in 1930 and died in Montreal on 8 August 1948 (obit. La Presse [Montreal], 9 Aug. 1948, 25; Le Devoir [Montreal], 10 Aug. 1948, 7; biog. and port.
