RANNEY, George Weir (1821-1907) was active in Peterborough where he was first in partnership with Fred W. Wilkins as 'Engineers, Provincial Land Surveyors and Architects' (Peterborough Examiner, 3 May 1877, 2). From 1880 onward he collaborated with William Blackwell as the 'joint architects' for several commissions in the Peterborough area. In 1890 he advertised himself as 'C.E., Architect & Patent Solicitor' who would '.....superintend execution of any architectural work in Peterborough or vicinity on behalf of Gordon & Helliwell', an indication that he worked under his own name and in collaboration with others (Peterborough Examiner, 10 Jan. 1890, 2, advert.). Ranney was born at Picton, Ontario on 19 February 1821 and later died at Belleville, Ont. on 27 June 1907 at the age of 86 years (obituary The Gazette (Montreal), 28 June 1907, 12; OA, County of Hastings, Register of Deaths 1868-1938, entry for June 1907).
