Tripp, Sydney John

TRIPP, Sydney John (1869-1941) was born in Spencerville, Ont. on 3 October 1869 and trained as a millwright, then studied architecture through correspondence school. He worked in North Bay, Ont. c. 1902-06, and moved to western Canada in 1906 and where he was employed by a manufacturer of flour milling equipment for whom he drew plans for flour mills and elevators. He opened an architectural office in Regina in 1909 and the following year joined in a short-lived partnership with Maurice Sharon (see list of works under Sharon & Tripp). Another brief partnership was recorded in 1911 with Norman Alpaugh, but this appears to have lasted for only 2 months. Tripp worked as a sole practitioner until early 1914 when he entered a partnership with A.J. Rowley. The outbreak of WWI in September of that year prompted them to close the office; Tripp continued to work alone until c. 1918, and he appears to have moved back to Ontario after this date. He died at Spencerville, Ont. on 27 September 1941 (obit. Evening Journal [Ottawa], 3 Oct. 1941, 5; Ottawa Citizen, 3 Oct. 1941, 12; biog. E.J. Gilbert, Up the Years with the Saskatchewan Assoc. of Architects, 1969, 20-1; inf. Sask. Assoc. of Architects; inf. Ross Herrington, Regina).
