Archer, W.H. (Sherbrooke, Que.)

ARCHER, W. H. (fl. 1901-03) was active in Sherbrooke, Quebec where he is listed as a 'building expert and architect' in the Sherbrooke City Directory of 1902-03. He prepared a design for the Town Hall, Fire Hall & Police Station at Magog, Que. in 1901, and in 1903 he submitted drawings for additions and alterations to the Protestant Academy on Queen Street in Sherbrooke, Que. He is erroneously credited as the architect who prepared the plans for the Court House in Sherbrooke (1904-06), but it is possible that he acted as the local supervising architect for Elzear Charest, the Chief Architect for the Province of Quebec, who is normally credited with this design (C.R., xiv, 16 Sept. 1903, 2). No other information on Archer has been found. However, he may be the same person as "William Henry Archer, architect", who was later active in Vancouver, B.C. from 1905 onward. An obituary article on the latter, published in Vancouver in 1922, states that he was active in Montreal from c. 1900 to 1903, and it is interesting to note that the city of Sherbrooke, situated about 80 miles southeast of Montreal, may have been the actual location of his earlier practise.
