Thomson, Augustus Clifford

THOMSON, Augustus Clifford (1837 -1896) was best known as a civil engineer and land surveyor in central Ontario, but he frequently turned his hand to the design of buildings in Simcoe County. Born in Scotland in 1837, he was active in Orillia in 1861 but in early 1873 he moved to Barrie to form a partnership with Maurice Gaviller (see list of works under Gaviller & Thomson). After the dissolution of their practise in May 1876 Thomson completed the work of the firm and also executed commissions under his own name. He was working on surveys near Parry Sound in 1879 when he suffered a stroke, but recovered and continued to work in the Barrie area for several years before moving to Kansas City where he was engineer of the 1890 reconstruction of the stockyards. He died in Chicago on 9 December 1896 (biog. Annual Report of the Assoc. of Ontario Land Surveyors for 1899, 220; inf. Stephen A. Otto, Toronto)
